I have been trying to isolate the noise coming out of my 1945 wc-51's driveline.. It only happens after I hit over 10 MPH, and continues..Never could hear it when just crawling slowly. It sounds almost like a bearing going bad..Or a combination of
bearing and a dry, scraping sound...
I could'nt tell exactly were on the truck it was coming from because of all the road noise...
At first, I thought it was the front end
or front drive shaft u-joints.. I installed lockout hubs and thought it would go away. Nope.
I feared the worst.... It was either the tranny or transfer case. I would start by removing the tranny and inspecting.
This I just don't have the time right now...But, I
have to know as I am going on a long trip with it soon.
So, I pulled the foor boards out and began the tranny removal
process... The first thing I took off was the spedometer cable
going into the tranny... Just for giggles, I spun the cable core
by hand, and lo and behold, the same grinding, scraping sound!
What luck! My tranny is fine... I took the truck for a spin without the cable hooked up to the tranny.. Thats it!
Either the cable and core are junk or the speedometer head is
wasted...
Talk about a problem that could have gotten expensive!
Anyone else ever have this problem thinking it was something more serious?
