ELECTRICAL
6 TO 12V CONVERSION
PARTS:
Ballast Resister - Standard #RU-10
4 post solenoid - Standard #SS581 (optional)
Universal two post starter switch (optional)
Fuel gauge resistor
PROCEDURES:
1. Plug the ballast resister in the wire that goes from the ignition switch to the coil. This will reduce the voltage from 12 to around 6-8. A good place to mount it is on the firewall.
2. Install the 4 post solenoid. One of the two small posts is + and one -. On the negative side post, run a wire to the side of the ballast resister that is going to the coil (you'll then have two wires connected to that side). The purpose of this is to get the full 12 volts for "hot" starting, then revert it back to 6-8 volts when running.
If your existing solenoid is a single post, you cannot set your system up for a stronger plug spark when starting.
Using the ballast resister requires no upgrade of points, condenser, or coil.
The 6 volt starter will spin faster and stronger, but will work just fine. I've made several conversions and have experienced no problem with 6 volt starters.
You'll need a resistor for your fuel gauge. VPW sells them.
