The only tires I've ever seen that were 22 ply were for aircraft. But I think aircraft used a different bead angle.
I did once see a machine at a tire store in National City that would nibble at the beads so they could be run on auto rims. Think of a roller with a bunch of tiny leather punchs that would each take a little core out, about 1 /16th inch diameter? Or a tiny lawn aereator?
And aircraft tires of the time were ribbed, like farm implement tires now. Latest photo I've seen of them on a FFPW was an old pic of one in Saudi desert. But unless Norm missed the fact that they had been recapped to NDMS?
