If the cab was shot it would be ok to put a new cab on it and put the truck #1 tag back in the door jam. We are starting to get off course here as far as "original" and a real legit truck. A vehicle is only "original" once! A restored truck is not "original" It can be restored original.
I understand what you are saying about all the trucks being basicially the same truck. There would be no real way to prove the cab and or bed was "original" to the truck. On my one 47 I have a title with the engine # on it. The trucks serial # tag and frame # match so that tells me its an original #'s matching truck.
As for the mopar muscle cars you have the VIN rivoted with special rivots in the dash. You have a number plate inside the engine area on the fender. Between these 2 things you can determine if its a real Hemi car and what basic options it came with. From there if you can find the build sheet in the car (3 of them usually) then you can determine the extra things it was ordered with. So now that we have a real hemi car we need to determine if its got the original engine. As the part of the VIN is stamped on the engine and in some cases the transmission will have it as well. Then on various locations of the car the last part of the VIN is stamped in the sheet metal and you can check those areas and have a pretty good idea if the car is real or been repaired/restored and then this will determine value a lot of the time.
I know the trucks are not this complicated but this topic has come up several times. Mr PG should sell the frames to those that need them. He probably should destroy the serial # tags of the trucks that have been parted out. Their lifes are now overwith. He should as a nice guy enter them into your registry so they are accounted for adding more pieces to finish your giant puzzle of locating every truck, which by the way I think is a great thing you are doing. Its always neat to see how many are still around.
