It's definitely a combination of things. An M37 usually has much beefier tires, which helps. I like to think it's because of the tall tires that M37's and Power Wagons have. Ever tried to push a shopping cart through gravel? It's a bummer.
Also, I think heavier is better in shallow mud. The tall skinny tires allow you to sink to more solid ground rather than float around on top. Just what I think...
