I've wondered about those claims too, so I checked out the corp. site...
Payload:
5.7L V8 Long Bed 4x2 - 2065 lbs, 4x4 - 2000 lbs - "With Max Payload Package."
Towing capacity:
5.7L V8 Long Bed 4x2 - 10,800 lbs, 4x4 - 10,500 lbs.
(The smaller 4.7 V8 is still rated over 8,000 lbs.)
The lawyers do qualify that with:
"Before towing, confirm your vehicle and trailer are compatible, hooked up properly and that you have any necessary additional equipment. Do not exceed any Weight Ratings and follow all instructions in your Owner's Manual. The maximum you can tow depends on the total weight of any cargo, occupants and available equipment."
Hate to sound like a Toyota commercial, but it does look like they've set up thier "1/2 ton" truck to handle much more than that.
