lifter question

when I looked at the lifters installed in the "rebuilt" motor that is currently installed in the PG they have a sort of dumbbell looking shape to them,(not damage, just how they were cast, the middle is very thin compared to the ends) as opposed the the solid cylindrical shaped lifters in the old motor. whats the difference?
