You're right. That could be what they're doing. I just have a hard time thinking like a jerk.
But with a seller like that, he'd just as soon promise the deal to one guy over the phone and then sell it locally for more if the first guy doesn't get there instantly to haul it off. I still wonder if this backfires as often as it succeeds, because how's the seller to know how high some sniper was prepared to go? Maybe the sniper was a collector who was willing to go a lot higher than the guy down the street who thought it'd make a cool hunting rig or whatever. I'm sure we've all been on one side or the other of "But I would've given you more..."
I can't feel too sorry for ebay, no matter which way the deal goes, because they'll still get their listing fee.
