Yes, the smaller opening and also its at a small angle goes towards the differential. This seals differential lube. If the seal was installed backwards, lube could seep under it or in a pressure situation could actually lift the edge of the seal and let the lube past. Take a look at both sides of hte seal and you will quickly see what I am shareing.
