It's been awhile since I've broke a shear pin, but I don't remember ever slipping backwards. I think if the internal brake is in good shape you ought to be able to dangle the rig from a tree (?).
I have a worm-drive logging winch of similar capacity that is missing the brake (in this case it's an external wrap-around kind, like an e-brake) and the winch alone will hold back more than 2,000 pounds (dead-lift) without spooling back. The only time I've had it spool out was when there was some slamming around when I was driving over some rough terrain with a big log and then it only released a couple of feet of cable.
