Varnishing on boats, we would put on 7 coats of spar varnish. It would be the same for spar urethane. With a finish like that you arent going to be throwing firewood into it or heading down to the local gravel pit for a load of stone. The linseed oil, when cut with turpentine, pine tar and japan dryer gives a very rugged finish that you can throw fire wood on and if it gets gnarly you throw on another coat. All depends if you are going to use it or polish it.
