Poplar rots in no time.
3/4 works, but 7/8 would be better. You'll need to rabbett the edges to fit the strips. If you are doing real cheepy/temporary, not interested in looking original, try to locate some sheets of Medex exterior grade partical board. 5x10 sheet would do nicely. Last long time. Not splintery like fir plywood.
