It is trying to dissipate more power than it was designed to handle. Find a large resistor at your parts store to put in the line ahead of the switch. Without knowing the amp rating of the motor you will have to guess a good ballpark. Try about a 12volt 25-50 watt resistor. This resistor will get fairly warm also. Hope this helps somehow.
