Jay,
Those are great stories and memories of the rig and your Dad. I have much the same. Dad ordered my '67 new and took delivery on 6/3/'67. He let me do most of the break in since I had quit working because of getting my draft notice. I did most of the driving for the next month. That was really a treat. I was home that December on leave before going overseas. We made a trip to our hunting camp in Eastern OR with it. Snow up to our butts. Had to do some winching to get all the way in. We had a snowmobile in the back and ran around on that some. I missed a corner with it and hit a tree head on. Ended up over the handle bars on my back in the snow, fortunately missing the tree. That sure would have made a mark! On the way out it was pretty icy and me being the somewhat dumb youngster, started showing off a bit when Dad thought I was going too fast. As we came up to the main highway I had forgotten about there being a bit of a downhill shot to the stop sign. After realization set in, I hit the brakes as hard as I dared but we still ended up sideways through a cattle guard. Fortunately, we stopped short of the pavement and then went on about our business, albeit a bit slower. Was pretty funny afterwards since Dad calmly says as we're sliding through the cattle guard, "oh oh, you're in trouble now!"=)
