I believe the main purpose of the PCV valve is to prevent a backfire in the intake from going down into the crankcase and detonating whatever fumes are there. In the old days, and on big engines, a crankcase explosion is a real possibility and can be pretty serious. I've had some old rigs that backfired into the carb now and then and sometimes set the carb on fire. Bad timing or worn valves are the usual causes.
