I've never had a U-joint packed in cosmoline, but the guy at the bearing house told me that you should use kerosene, not gasoline, to clean bearings because gasoline leaves a residue that makes it hard for the oil to adhere properly. Cold cosmoline is almost insoluble in anything, but heat melts it away easily. I would try warm kerosene. Small amounts remaining are harmless, which is why they used it.
