Bryan, yes it can be done. I am a steel fabricator and have just finished fabricating all the components for one for myself. I wanted secure storage on the site prior to putting the entire building up. I used only 2 containers in my design. It is built to be wide enough to function as an aircraft hanger. I made the eave height 14' so there is covered storage on top of the containers for snowmobiles, hardwood collection small boats etc. with forklift access. I had an engineer friend go through it with me as I certainly didn't want it falling down on an expensive airplane. It is designed for a 30# live load. It is going to be built in a county with no permit required. So we only did enough calculations to satisfy us. More in depth analysis would have to be done to submit for a permit.
Last weekend I saw a shop with the frames for the freestanding motor home covers attached between 2 containers. I would guess it was about 24' wide between the containers. Looked a little light to me.
If the containers give you what you need in combination with your shop, go for it.
I could send you some copies of what I am doing if that would be helpfull.
It might be a few days befroe I could get to it. Regards, Byron Miller
