In the mid 90's, Chrysler changed head gasket material moving away from asbestos to a paper type material. This resulted in Chrysler changing a lot of head gaskets until a solution was found. Because of this and the jeeps year, my guess is he has a blown head gasket.
There are three type of Fel-Pro PermaTorque head gaskets: two with a steel core and one with a clinched core that is used with cast iron block and aluminum heads combinations, so depending on his engine component combinations, he'll need the correct head gasket.
Fel-Pro PermaTorque head gaskets don't require a gasket sealer, only the embossed shim or metal face type require a sealer. You do need to use Fe-Pro Gray Bolt Prep on any bolts that enter the water jacket in the block. Those bolts that do not go into a water jacket, lightly coat the threads with motor oil and the underside of EACH head bolt on assembly. Pickup a Fel-Pro Gaskets/Torque Tables Form No. 486-96. Some automotive stores carry them.
Also have the head checked for warpage at a machine shop and have it resurfaced if needed. If the engine overheated during this, have a valve job done. Overheating usually causes valves to warp.
Ask him if he saw any white smoke from the exhaust as he was driving, if so, head gasket for sure.
