The non-syncro transmissions are refered to as "sliding gear" transmissions since 2nd and 3rd gears slide on the output shaft to mesh with the other gears. New Process has two versions as follows:
Up-to-Type (42-51 WCs&PWs), civilian trucks and the After-Type (52 to early 56 PWs) which is somtimes refered to by transmission shops as the non-snycro NP420, do to its size.
The snycro NP420 is used on late 56-71 PW's and other military/civilian trucks
The PIF has the case numbers to identify which transmission you may have.
There were other manufacturers of sliding gears; Borg Warner, etc
