Line-X or Rhino Coat is applied by dealers in the franchaise. It takes special equipment.
I know Line-X is applied hot and cures in 30 seconds although 24 hours is needed before real rough treatment. My running boards typically run $55 for the pair.
Before application, the area is masked. The Masking tape for the edges has a wire inside.
When the shooting is complete the wire is pulled cutting a sharp edge. I have them shoot my running boards on the top and down over the lip on the running board. In my opinion, Line-X is tougher than Rhino, but that is a area open to heavy debate LOL.
