Actually, I think it's pretty dang cool. Granted, a guy should be able to do without it just like he should be able to do without synchromesh, automatic choke, power steering, electric wipers, etc. I suppose there were once old-timers who thought electric starters and heaters were for wimps.
Technically there isn't much to it, just tachometer and speedometer pickups plus software that "knows" the gear ratios of the tranny and the RPM specs of the engine. If there's a brownie box or two-speed T-case, it would also need an RPM pickoff directly on the transmission output.
