I didn't think to test it with a magnet at the moment I stopped heating it. I did let it cool slowly in calm air. I have another one on another tranny I'll probably also have to heat to get off. Since the flange isn't heat-treated to begin with, it sounds like it's probably safe to use. Given that it's the same size as the ones downstream of the T-case which are subjected to twice the torque, this one probably has plenty of safety margin. If it breaks all that will happen is the truck stops going, and it can be replaced without pulling the tranny, so if I just throw a spare in the tool box this seems like a safe approach.
