I am in the land of Doug fir, WA State. I am redoing the bed the way the original owner did it in 1966 and it held up really well. It is dry engineering grade fir. I got to pick my nine boards from a batch of 64 so they are all real nice. Oak is expensive here. the way the crossmemebers are situated and they way it all ties together it will be very stout.
