Removing snap rings

I'm tearing down a transmission and a great many parts inside it are held on the shafts with external snap rings. Unfortunately, they're not the kind with holes at the ends that you can spread apart with snap ring pliers. They're just plain rings, with a small gap between the ends, like piston rings. I've gotten some of the easier ones off by prying with screwdrivers, using snap-ring pliers, etc, but the heavier ones and the ones in hard-to-get to places are driving me nuts. What's the trick to getting these buggers off? Is there some special tool?
