OT: Strange Oil Consumption help

Guys, I’m puzzled and looking for comments/advice.

Back in early September I made a trip to TN in my “ferd” and when I got back to IL, noticed that the truck was:
Idling High (1,750+ RPM) on Starts and then after a few seconds dropping back to normal (800-1,000 RPM)
Blue Smoke on Start ups after setting a while.
Using oil
Pre-detonation pinging was very noticeable on low RPM loads

The smoking continued to get worse as well as the oil consumption.

The Truck has the 6.8L V-10 with a Banks Power Pack and Super Chip. I’d been running mid grade (90 octane) and suspected that the IL mid grade being the same price as regular might be higher in Ethanol content that I or the truck was used to, so switched to the High Octane fuels.

I made the switch to the high grade when I made the run to pick up some parts and when the trip was over, no more smoke, oil consumption, pinging or high start idles.

I’ve stayed on the High Octane with success since then (late October) and until this past 400 mile trip to MI thought I might have just had an issue with the truck nit liking the Ethanol fuels, either messing up a sensor and pulling high vacuum on the crank case, or washing down the cylinders and letting oil by.

But now in this last 400 miles the truck used over a quart and is smoking on start ups again.

Anyone with any ideas?

I originally thought it might be valve guide seals, but then the change in fuels caused all the problems to go away, I thought not, now I’m perplexed.

Will (should have bought a Dodge)
