Hi Vaughn,
I originally used the NP-540dd that came with the 318. When I first test drove the truck after the repower I was getting a fierce gear growl, on accelleration but it didnt start till 3rd gearif I slowed down it would abate. Thinking that it had to be the tranny I pulled it back out and replaced all of the bearings. Re-installed and absolutely no change. Then I swapped the transfer cases, no change, I removed the Dennan overdrive and replaced it with a straight driveshaft. no change. Thinkin that the center driveshaft might be the culpret, (The longer transmission resulted in a very short shaft with a steep angle) I bought a brand new NP-435 from Dennis Sherman. I put that in and now only get the noise for a short period in 3rd gear and it goes away in 4th. I have pulled the bell housing cover and checked up in there and nothing looks amiss.
My next thing will be to drive it without a rear driveshaft to see if it could be telegraphing up from the rear diff.
All of the test driving has been done without the transmission hump installed.
I am going to go ahead with the TC rebuild.
Thanks,
Tim
