The Spicer 5-170x has 15/16" diameter bearing caps which won't fit the PW. From Vaughns data in the last forum it seems the early WDX winch shafts may have used a bolted thrust plate type joint assy which would explain the 853 joint not being a direct replacement. From serial #88759859 and up it appears they went to retaining the u-joint caps with snap rings. This is the type of set-up I've got on my Los Angeles built 1950 PW. The outside snap ring type yokes show up in my 1961 Dodge truck parts book along with the 1325989 u-joint which matches the dimensions of the aftermarket Rockwell 1FR series joint. So from what you've run across with having to machine the 853 joint to fit the early (pre-serial #88759859) thrust plate style yokes, no current direct relacement u-joint exists. Although if you've got the later outside snap ring type yokes the 853 is a direct replacement. Also the Precision 305 is for the transfer case to axle u-joints, along with rear pto tailshaft joints.
