The 230 Dodge engine has the lonegest stroke of the Dodge flat heads (217-251), as a result of that, it sounds as though it's about to fly apart, until you get use to the sound. Driving the truck more and more, you'll find that after a bit, the engine sounds fine at 40mph, and is comfortably working. 40-45mph is a good cruzing range for the engine and even 50mph can be maintained, but limit that to short periods only. Try to keep your truck around 40mph for cruzing. Other factors do add to producing effects of a screeming engine,
- 6 blade fan
- metal to metal contact creating vibration noise, i.e., cab laying on top of trans cover, or shot rear engine mounts. These can add to the engine noise.
Your goal is to eliminate all rattles and vibrations so you only hear the cylinder combustion or engine thump at 40mph for a quite, pleasent ride!
