Does anyone know a good way to remove the crusties from an Alkaline battery leak?

I am scraping gently, but does baking soda nuetralize this too?

Dodge content: to the old girl out to get breakfast this a.m., I was fairly sucessful in drinking a cup of coffee and shifting at the same time.

Good thing the cell phone did'nt ring LOL
