We had a 4-53 in an old P&H excavator and it ALWAYS started, maybe a little ether on the really cold days but it started. Now once it was running it was LOUD as they are 2 stroke diesels and high revving. They also slobber oil or at least ours did. I think you'd have much better luck with the 4BT Cummins since there is a wealth of knowledge from Paul and others who have done that swap. But owning a Dodge always means going down the road less traveled and daring to be different so I don't want to rain on your parade. I think size might come into play with the 4-53 also but it's been a few years since I've seen one, good luck with whatever you decide.
