Toyota had crew cab pick-ups in the early 80's, as well as probably the other Japanese companies, you just didn't see them imported into the US. And Crosley had a mini pickup (all their stuff was mini!) in 1947.
In the US the designer of the jeep was Bantam, not Willys. But in 1935 the Japanese had a jeep vehicle that looked very similar to the first US jeeps with the rounded fronts. When Willys came out with the jeep wagon in the mid 40's all they were doing is copying an idea someone else had already come up with, as they had done with the jeeps. The point is all these commercials anymore are just bull but you would be surprised how many people take them as gospel.
