Are you sure it is an L?

Most Flat head six engines stamped by Dodge started with:

P = Plymouth

S = Desoto

C = Chyrsler

T = truck

IND = industrial

After 1957 things got a bit weirder, like a 1958 230 truck motor is a L6D3 or an L23 or an L230 depending on when it was stamped.

It is possible you have a car motor from 1958, as L was the letter for the 1958 model year.

If the number is stamped in the top of the pad then it is most likely a 25" head engone, so it would be a 228ci, 237ci, 251ci, 265ci, or something close.

I find lots of engines with weird numbers stamped into the pads, and often times the numbers were stamped by an engine rebuilder. The last one I checked had a rebuild tag attached to the valve cover, I would check the engine over for a rebuild tag just to be safe.

A T314 is a 51-53 truck motor, and I often find the stampings are not clear, so that might be what you have.

I would clean the pad well, and check again to make sure that is not a L but a T.

Good luck.

Eric
