The 2.7L chain is almost bullet proof...but with over 100 links and probably 6 feet of length some stretching has occured. Excessive stretch allows the cams to be slightly out of time, possibly hurting performance/fuel economey. Its a lot of work to get to that water pump, and a lot of coin to replace 24 crashed valves. Safest to replace chain while your in there. Also look for any excessive wear on the long nylon surfaced chain guides. Bleading down the hydraulic tensioner before installation requires a special tool, but a finishing nail drove into a piece of wood leaving the head stick up approx 3/16" works also.
