You're thinking of halogen. Metal halide is very similar to mercury or sodium lamps, they are all HID type lighting. The main difference is the Kelvin temp which controls the light. Mercury vapor and high pressure sodium tend to be orange/yellow, metal halide are a blue which appears white to the eye and gives a more natural appearing light without the "pulse" of a mercury or sodium light.
