Oil filter ?'s

I am about to change the oil in the old 47 WF-32. It has the canister oil filter. Inside it has a sock type filter element. My parts store has 2 metal cartridge type replacement filters for canister type filters but when I told them it was a sock filter it threw them off. They looked again and sure enough theres a part # for the sock and i have one on order.

Question is can the sock filter be replaced with a cartridge filter or were there multiple oil filter systems back in the day and I have to stay with the sock type?!
