rough idle

Having a hard time getting to a smooth idle on my 53 FFPW. All-stock set up and newly tuned up. When I pinch the vacuum hose before the distributor, the idle smooths out and she purrs. Otherwise, at idle I'm getting burps and skips. Any ideas appreciated. (FYI I'm a novice).
