There was always a finite, constant supply of crude, and there is and was a constant demand for its products. They just changed what they were cracking from gas to Diesel. They knew that there was a new demand for Diesel, so they artificially raised the price.
It should still be the same expense, percentage-wise, to create the various products.
Supply, demand, greed.
