I had to learn the hard way. The only flat I ever had on the trail in a Dodge WC was when I was running 11.00 x 16 Michelins. I had talc in there but not enough. i put in the same amount as I had run with my bias plies and it wasn't enough. Like you said side wall flex wore a small split in the tube about 3/4 of an inch long. I happened again later not on the trail and that is when I started to put alot more quantity of talc in my tires. the bias don't flex as much so they are less susceptble to failure.
