MOst folks do not know how potentially dangerous bats can be.
There are several cases where people have died of rabies with no reported bite, and it turns out that they had to have been bitten by a bat, often when they were sleeping. The laboratory can identify the specific variant of rabies virus and show if it came from a bat vs a racoon or other animal.
Rabies treatement is VERY expensive now. I know of a person who had to shell out $100k due to rabies exposure of many people in his business.
