After reading the posts below, I think that the most important fact to remember is that the earth is not predictable. Humans have been around only for a short second in the large scheme of the worlds existence. There is no possible way that we can even to predice exactly what is coming next. For the last 20,000 years we think we have been coming out of an ice age. That explains the heat. But sometime in the next 5,000 years we will be headed back into another ice age, mabye. But none of these theories can be proven because no one has seen it happen before. One large volcanic eruption could very easily set us back into a mini Ice Age by blocking the sun, hell...it killed the dinosaurs. Many people also think that lowering the speed limit will help save the earth ( like it needs OUR help ). Numerous studies have been made about changing speed limits, replacing stop signs with yeild signs, etc. The point is that no one really knows whats going on. Unless some non-politicaly motivated research is incorporated with some good ol' fashioned observation, no one ever will get this rock figured out.
