Yes. the reason ( or one of the reasons) that the industry went from 6 volt to 12, is that for the same amount of power (Watts) you need half the amperage (which is inversely related to wire size) when you double the voltage.
The Ohm's law is as follows: P=IxE
P (power, in Watts) equals I (Amperage) times E (Electromagnetic Force, aka Volts)
...so if you can double the Volts, you can halve the amps, which means you can use smaller wire, so you can save $ on copper.
