O.T. computer question

I am experiencing a peculiar behaviour from my computer. Being something of a Luddite I am at a loss to explain it.
Every evening at approximately 21:30 my computer slows way down. If I am running explorer or outlook they take forever to respond. other applications like Word take a long time to open. I have heard of programs that commandeer your computer to crunch numbers and the like without your permission. I see no evidence of this however the network icon apears to be shuttling great amounts of data back and forth.
Any answers? , even wild speculation will serve at this point.
By way of information, I am running XP ad have a DSL connection.
