from a 50 year old text book - Automotive
Engines - William Crouse
remove plugs - make sure throttle is wide open - hold gauge in hole - crank & write down readings - then pour a small amount of
heavy oil in each cylinder & retest
if compression pressure increases to a more
normal reading then the problem is with the
rings - if a cylinder stays low then the
problem is with one or more of the valves
if the problem is not with the rings or valves then it indicates a head gasket problem
not rocket science
old time mechanics repair guidelines:
- one bad valve - fix the one bad valve
- one bad piston - fix the one bad piston
Complete "Overhauls" were few & far between
more common was a in the vehicle ring & valve
job + roll in new rod & main inserts
