The consensus seems to be dot 3 is not only good enough but is better in that gets absorbed in it rather pooling in low spots. This means a little rust everywhere rather than rusting out wherever the water set. I've read conflicting statements about how thoroughly a dot 3 system needs to be purged when changing to dot 5. Dot 5 is expensive and harder to find though if you're lucky you may get mil surplus dot 5 for $30/gal. The main advantage of dot 5 is that it withstands higher temperatures, but that's not an issue with our old trucks. I would stick with dot 3 and change it every few years.
