The story was they swapped a bunch of well-used HMMWVs to some contractor in exchange for something completely unrelated. I can't remember what. Then that contractor sold them in several large lots to a few major dealers who then re-sold them to the public. Somehow that swapping deal either bypassed the AM General no-compete clause, but as far as I know that was the only time it was done.
A friend of mine got one of those and had it in the car show here today. It was a bit rough when he got it, but was driveable after replacing the T-case with one I happened to have sitting around. Now he has it all tricked out so it looks about as good as any "stock" HMMWV could look. As I recall he gave $20K or so for it before he started fixing it up.
