I used a piece of 1"x 4" flat bar with in a u shape with 4 3/4" threaded rods to push the ring down a 1/4" to get the lock ring off. When you let off it only comes 1/4" higher than it started. Then turn the wheel over on a block and use a tire hammer to knock it off. Usually a couple hits does it.
