You could remove the yoke and the brake, then the rear cover/bearing retainer- without disturbing the bearings and shims, or the out put shaft... it has needle bearings in it, like the input shaft of a tranny.
Problem is that if you disturb tooo many parts the needle bearings can fall into the transfer case, leading to it's locking up going down the road- causes all kinds of grief...crashs, twist drive shafts....
Whereas a GPS mounted to the dash will give speed readings, every 1/10th of a second. For $89... While it is tough to chart latitude and longitude while going down the road, some other info it gives might be useful- clock, altimeter... mount GPS in speedo hole... needs external antenna though...
