transmission swap/starter question

I put a transmission out of a '56 PW into a '48 B1, because the later one had a PTO to operate the winch. Naturally, the newer bellhousing had to accompany the newer transmission. I am now having trouble getting the original starter to engage the flywheel, which is original. Evidentally the newer bellhousing is thicker. How do I correct this? Thanks. Jerry Henry
