That was 1983 +/-. Before computerised dynos, we just had a big meter on the wall that showed hp and mph. Tach was on the scope. But I never felt that I lost any low end- there is no dis advantage to breathing freely. Not like putting in a full race cam. Flatheads breath so poorly, what with all the direction changes required by having valves in the block. They need all the help they can get.
I was the first full time line mechanic, overhauling engines, making dual exhaust, custom swaps, 2bb->4bbl, etc. But the tune-up guys sure didn't stint on the 'fringe benefits'. So, jetting and dist recurves were liberally applied.
That job was tons of fun, 'til I blew a disc. That made me an automotive hobbiest.
