Once upon a time, some Southern guys working for me pulled guard duty at a base in the Deep South. I got awakened by a phone call, and the guard said that there was a "far" (fire) in "D" barracks, and what should he do?
Upon investigation, it seems that the Southern Boy had heard from Private Farr, (a Yankee) reporting simply that he was at his post in Barracks "D".
The message got a little scrambled, from "This is Farr, in Barracks D" to ""THERE'S A FIRE IN BARRACKS D!!!"
To paraphrase Gen. Patton, we are a union of 50 states, separated by a common language.
